[FOOD] Mooning over snowskin mooncakes
It’s that time of the year to dust off your lanterns, roll out your top grade Chinese teas, get together with family and friends and watch the moon: Mid-Autumn Festival is right around the corner.
Re-inventing old favourites and crafting innovative new hits, Feng Shui Inn will be introducing four new snowskin mooncakes – Almond with Bird’s Nest, Wafer Crunch with Custard, Black Sesame with Green Tea and Chocolate with Coffee.
While many are often cloyingly sweet, the snowskin mooncakes crafted by Chef Li and team at Feng Shui Inn is perfectly balanced – not too saccharine sweet with just the right amount of richness. We got excited and bought all four before devouring them in a flurry of anticipation. But eating them in the right sequence will ensure that flavours don’t get drowned out; so embark on a moon(cake) trail, starting from:
1. Almond with Bird’s Nest
Nutritious bird’s nest combined with smooth almond paste makes a refreshing mooncake that promises to nourish the complexion due to the high quality imperial bird’s nest. This is highly recommended for fans of almonds as the paste is strongly infused with almond essence which lingers in your mouth. The soft and chewy bird’s nest centre enhances the overall taste and texture for a nice finish.
2. Wafer Crunch with Custard
If you like crunchy, surprise centers, this is the mooncake for you. A noteworthy piece, it is soft on the outside and crumbly on the inside. The mild custard paste gels well with the layered crisp textures of the wafer crunch and is popular with all our tasters, regardless of preference.
3. Black Sesame with Green Tea
Our personal favourite! Deceptively pink, the black sesame filling is (fortunately) not masked by the rich and aromatic paste infused with the essence of green tea. The marriage of these two flavours is distinctly oriental, and is (as tried and tested by many other desserts), a fool-proof blend. This goes well with a pot of your favourite Chinese tea too.
4. Chocolate with Coffee
Polish your mooncake feast off with a bite of intense chocolate and coffee. Surprisingly refreshing on the palate, the bittersweet chocolate is a great precursor to the rich coffee aftertaste. If you’re a coffee lover, this bold creation is something not to be missed.
The mini snowskin mooncake is retailing in boxes of 8 at $65 per box; the impressive and elegant looking box elevates the experience to a memorable one – a perfect gift for relatives and friends!
Other than the mini snowskin mooncakes, the line-up of traditional mooncake flavours also includes the Lotus Paste Double Yolk, the most sought after White Butter Skin with Pandan Sweet Corn Paste, new flavour Sweet Corn Paste with Chestnut, the White Lotus Paste with Black Sesame Yolk, and the Assorted Nuts “Ng Yan” - an evergreen Cantonese favourite.
