The 1975 at RWS: Best of 5

Before you rock to the eclectic sounds of this unpredictable Manchester four-piece, read on for five trivia about the band.

1. What’s in a name?

The band name was from a date Matt Healy found scrawled in a book.

2. Name game

“Sex” was first released in 2011 with a different video, under a different band name: The Slowdown (as far as we know, this video is lost to history). By the time “Sex” was released again in 2013 with a new video, The 1975 have gone through the names Talkhouse, Bigsleep, and Drive Like I Do.

3. Famous parents, famous friends

Frontman Matt Healy’s mother was a TV presenter and his father an actor. When he was growing up, his father was friends with members of Dire Straits, a bestselling band from the 80s. The first guitar he played was the one Dire Straits used to record their hit song ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

4. Matt pranked Harry Styles to lend him £5,000

Matt Healy once made a prank call to One Direction’s Harry Styles on a radio programme. Harry Styles was cool with lending him £5,000 despite only meeting each other for a few times.

5. The producer connection

The missing link between The 1975 and Foals, who also performed at our Coliseum a while ago, is the producer Mike Crossey, who have produced for both acts, as well as other British indie acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Two Door Cinema Club.
