RWS Street Eats Showdown: Thai, Viet dishes cook-off where you can decide the winner

It’s going to be a battle of culinary pride on 12 August 2017. Comprising two rounds of Southeast Asian street food cook-offs, the RWS Street Eats Showdown will feature an RWS chef competing against an overseas chef in each round – and you get to judge it!

The RWS Street Eats Showdown will be hosted by local comedic actor Chua EnLai as The Noose’s well-loved Pornsak Sukhumvit. For judging, 50 guests will be selected to sample and vote for the winning side. These 50 lucky guest judges will also walk away with an RWS Street Eats goodie bag that will include an Early Bird Special Bundle priced at S$30. Round 1 (Phad Thai): Chef Hoja vs. Chef Pongmorn

Baan Phadthai

Phad Thai is a dish of rice noodles commonly stir-fried together with prawns and vegetables, and is one of Thailand’s most iconic street food dishes.

In this cook-off, Chef Lorenz Hoja of RWS’s L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon faces of against Chef Sujira Aom Pongmorn from Bangkok’s revered ‘King of Phad Thai’ restaurant Baan Phadthai.

Chef Hoja brings with him a decade of Michelin Star-level culinary experience. But can that trump Chef Pongmorn’s street cred with her specialty dish, especially since Phad Thai is not something you’ll find in a French fine dining restaurant such as L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon?

Chef Hoja hinted that he is quite familiar with the dish and will attempt a “new, very innovative version”. Only one way to find out if new beats classic – be at Resorts World Sentosa on 12 August.

Round 2 (Bún Tht Nướng): Chef Halat vs. Chef Long

Bún Thịt Nướng literally translates to barbecued meat noodles. The most popular version in Vietnam comprises grilled marinated pork placed over rice vermicelli noodles with a side of dipping sauce.

CURATE’s resident chef Chef Benjamin Halat once went a backpacking trip to Vietnam and fell in love with Bún Thịt Nướng. Even though he knows it’ll be hard to beat Chef Steven Long of Hanoi’s Sen Tay Ho (who placed 3rd in Top Chef Vietnam 2015) at his own game, Chef Halat says, “I have a strategy but I will not tell, is secret”.

In fact, Chef Halat is so confident of his secret strategy, he believes that there are “no challenges only solutions”. Head down to Resorts World Sentosa on 12 August 2017 to find out if his Bún Thịt Nướng speaks for itself.
