[PLAY] Mythbuster – MICE and holidays don’t mix

Banquet in Compass Ballroom, Resorts World Sentosa.

It’s easy to brush Resorts World Sentosa off as just a family-friendly destination, putting us in the shade against other conventional venues in the MICE (Meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) department.

We admit, the Resort is more famous for its two major attractions – Universal Studios Singapore and the Marine Life Park. But it is more than capable of holding a conference, meeting or even a company retreat.

Indeed, mixing work and play is our strength and forte. Business meetings here are rarely dull and with USS and MLP just round the block, it is the perfect opportunity to take your family for a well-deserved holiday.

Ocean Gallery, S.E.A. Aquarium

The fishes are listening in too.

Capacity: 320

Where’s a better place to hold an annual retreat than in front of a calming hue of blue and with the planet’s largest acrylic panel as a window to the wondrous underwater world? It’s hard to match the magnificent view of S.E.A. Aquarium, let alone beat it.

In fact, the aquarium was involved in several high profile events, including one that features the likes of Tyra Banks in Asia’s Next Top Model. If you are looking to deliver a powerful keynote address or motivate employees, this is it.

Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore New York Street
Fancy having your dinner and dance here?

Capacity: Hollywood Boulevard (Sheltered) – 1,000, New York Street (Sheltered) – 1,500, Ancient Egypt Street – 1,200, Waterworld Amphitheatre – 3,500

If you are shopping for venues, make this your first stop because it could also be your last. Making up almost half the Resort, the sprawling Universal Studios Singapore (USS) has the best catalogue of venues, each with its own unique quirks, and is perfect for themed parties.

Go for glitz and glamour at Hollywood Boulevard, soak in the buzzing atmosphere at New York and venture into the mystifying Ancient Egypt. Or make a splash by announcing a pay rise at the Waterworld™ Amphitheatre. There are more ways to organise a company retreat than the usual conference rooms. USS is a nonpareil venue for business and pleasure.

 The Maritime Experiential Museum

Perfect for buffet lines.

Capacity: Front Entrance (Sheltered) – 200, Waterfront Promenade (Partially Sheltered) – 800

Alternatively, there is The Maritime Experiential Museum – a place chock-full of culture and historical significance. Fancy talking business in front of a full-sized replica of Admiral Zheng He’s Bao Chuan, a crucial vessel in his dealings with international traders? How apt and inspiring.

If you enjoy being closer to the sea, there’s the Waterfront Promenade, which will give you a panoramic view of neighbouring Vivocity. Stunning at night and calm in the morning, it’s great for having a sit-down dinner or luncheon al fresco style.

Resorts World Convention Centre

Compass Ballroom: Official venue for Star Awards 2010.

Capacity: 11,000

Enormous and spacious – probably the only adjectives fit to describe this venue.

With the ability to house some 11,000 people, the Resorts World Convention Centre is the place to be if your company requires space. With a seating capacity of 6,500, the Compass Ballroom alone makes up more than half of the capacity. Many concerts were held there and it was also the venue for Mediacorp’s Star Awards 2010.

Or if your company is looking to hold any workshops, consider the 30 function rooms spread out across the convention centre.
