|Special promo for Great World Cabaret Cat 1 tickets.|
Dancing girls, magicians, comedians, and lo and behold… strip tease! These are the very stuff that make cabarets the top entertainment hubs of Singapore back in the 1950s and 1960s. And Great World Cabaret will take you back to this era of glamourous entertainment.
Having watched the show, I must say it was a joyous (and melodious) throwback to the good old days. Here are 6 reasons why you need to grab your tickets now if you haven’t.
#1 Top stand-up comedians
Four weeks, four of Singapore’s top stand-up comedians: Mark Lee, Hossan Leong, Sebastian Tan and Judee Tan. Each comedian will perform for a week and Mark got the ball rolling on week one. His signature ‘Ah Beng broken England’, sarcastic humour and PG13 dating advice brought the house down, and his character Valentiko to life.
Mark set the bar pretty high. Which is why I’m itching to catch the other stand-up veterans in the coming weeks.
Here’s more about the comedians and their characters.
#2 History not found in the textbooks
If you’re born after 1970, you probably have not heard of the Flaming Flowers. ‘Striptease Queen’ Rose Chan, ‘A-go-go Queen’ Sakura Teng and ‘Queen of Keroncong’ Kartina Dahari were the top three figures in Singapore’s entertainment scene in the 1960s. With Great World Cabaret, their performances have been ‘resurrected’ for a short lesson in Singapore’s entertainment history.

#3 50 shades of Rose
Rose Chan was probably Asia’s most famous striptease dancer who made waves in the ‘50s and ‘60s with her sensational acts. Here on the stage of Great World Cabaret, Rose will showcase her legendary act. But how did she do it without getting into trouble with the censors? You’ll have to watch it yourself.
#4 Bling bling
If you’re a fan of retro fashion, this show is a stunning visual treat. From neon pink sequined cheongsams to over-the-top boa fans which are a staple in yesteryear cabarets, every scene sparkles and shines with magnificent costumes.
#5 Songs of nostalgia
I love the song and dance sequences, particularly the Flaming Flowers Medley where I was tapping my feet to familiar classics like ‘Rose Rose I Love You’, ‘Shake Shake Shake’ and ‘Bunga Melur’.
The performers did a great job rendering these iconic songs, especially Aisyah Aziz. Her powerful vocals and elegant execution gave a convincing portrayal of Kartina Dahari. Even her delivery of Chinese songs was nothing short of amazing.
#6 Death-defying acrobatics
Honestly, I felt the acrobatics segment was a little out of place in the cabaret programming. But that said, the performance by Qing Dao Acrobatic Troupe was breathtaking. The acrobatic acts atop human pyramids and somersaults in mid-air without any safety net earned them rounds of applause.
On the flip side, the illusion act was pretty pedestrian. But then again, we’re talking about cabarets some six decades ago, way before the rise of David Blaine and Criss Angel. Also, I felt it would add to the authenticity of the show if there were dialect songs in the line-up. If regulations are an issue, perhaps we could have just snippets of a few classic dialect songs?
Glitz, glamour, nostalgia. All in all, Great World Cabaret is a fun, colourful and feel good journey down memory lane, especially for the older generation. Perfect for the whole family this festive season.
