Guest comedians in Great World Cabaret tell all

Great World Cabaret, showing at Resorts World Theatre from 19 February to 17 March, will bring you back to the past to the golden age of cabaret and music.

Similar to cabarets of the past where famous personalities would make guest appearances, the show will feature a different guest star/ standup comedians each week to bring you a fresh spin and new laughs.

Let’s introduce you to the guest stars of the show–Mark Lee, Hossan Leong, Sebastian Tan and Judee Tan–and the role they are playing.

We’ll let them tell you why you need to watch Great World Cabaret.

Mark Lee as Valentiko from 19 to 24 February

Great World Cabaret Mark Lee as Valentino

Who is Valentiko?

A small time laundromat owner who thinks he is Singapore’s answer to Marlon Brando, Valentiko adores the glitz and glamour of the Great World Cabaret.

Like a starry-eyed fan, he often falls over in his eagerness to associate himself with the stars and gorgeous show girls.

Unfortunately in their eyes, he is no Brando or Valentino. Just an awkward “cheena tiko” who keeps their stage costumes clean and pristine.

Q&A with Mark Lee

Q: How did you prepare for your role in Great World Cabaret?
A: I have prepared for this role for 27 years since I started acting in “Comedy Tonight”.

Q: If you were to choose a role in the cabaret that best suited you, what would it be and why?
A: Clown. It is the most challenging act in the whole cabaret because I need to make the audience laugh without saying a single word.

Q: In less than 10 words, tell us why we should come see Great World Cabaret.
Because Mark Lee is performing.

Hossan Leong as Mat Tarzan from 26 February to 3 March

Hossan Leong in Great World Cabaret

Who is Mat Tarzan?

From a young age, Mat Tarzan knew he was no ordinary little boy. With only one finger, he could crack milk bottles and lift his cradle. But his superhuman feats brought more woe than joy. Tired of his accidental destruction around the kampong, the villagers banished him from his hometown.

For years, he hid in the forests of Bukit Timah, until one fateful day, he saved the life of Great World Cabaret’s host and the rest is history. These days, instead of wielding brute force, he teaches people how to be as strong as him through the power of concentration.

Q: What was your impression of the cabarets in the past before your involvement in Great World Cabaret?
A: Smoky, fun, sequins with music. Laughter and the freedom to express!

Q: If you were to choose a role in the cabaret that best suited you, what would it be and why?
A: I’d be the host! Because I’m the host with the most…sequins!

Q: How did you prepare for your role in Great World Cabaret?
A: I pole dance to get in shape.

Sebastian Tan as Broadway Beng from 5 to 10 March

Sebastian Tan in Great World Cabaret

Even if you know him, we’re still going to tell you who is Broadway Beng.

He’s funny, he’s local and he is old school cock-a-doo-da-doo-dle. Broadway Beng® is a true blue “Beng”, and a “Hokkien” boy who discovers a love for all things from the west.

Hailing from “Ang Swa” (Redhill), he finds himself in Great World Cabaret doing what he loves – cracking audiences up with laugh-a-minute stories of his east-west culture clash and belting out Broadway tunes with a “Hokkien” twist, complete with “Ah Beng” fashion and “Ah Beng” dance moves.

Q&A with Sebastian Tan

Q: What was your impression of the cabarets in the past before your involvement in Great World Cabaret?

When I was a little kid,my parents or aunties would bring me to wath the Chinese version of cabaret. I was dazzled by the colours, the music, costumes, glamorous singers, dancers, feathers! It transformed my world and became part of my inspiration for Broadway Beng.

Q: If you were to choose a role in the cabaret that best suited you, what would it be and why?
A: Broadway Beng.

Q: In less than 10 words, tell us why we should come see Great World Cabaret.
A: Sibei funny, colourful, entertaining, fantastic, wonderful, touching, nostalgic, magical.

Judee Tan as Teo Chew Moi from 12 to 17 March

Judee Tan in Great World Cabaret

Who is Teo Chew Moi?

Dr Teo Chew Moi will forever change the way you view traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This crowd-pleasing TCM practioner dispenses medical advice with a quirky spin.

Armed with years of clinical expertise, she helps cast members of the Great World Cabaret with a wide range of deadly ailments. For example, show girls suffering from life-threatening Abandonment or Fatal Adipose Tissue (FAT).

She also nurses a crush on the drool-worthy host, who is sadly oblivious to her secret desires.

Q&A with Judee Tan

Q: What was your impression of the cabarets in the past before your involvement in Great World Cabaret?

In my imagination, cabaret in the past is this mysterious world, full of dark secrets and desires. It is a place where people transport into another world, let their cheeky “demons” out and have a fun time, uninhibitedly.

Q: If you were to choose a role in the cabaret that best suited you, what would it be and why?
Striptease! Though I would never go all the way. I love a good tease! It’s great entertainment and really a show of performing prowess.

Q: How did you prepare for your role in Great World Cabaret?
Eat a lot of herbs.
