IT IS often said that men have the bigger appetite and can eat faster than women. But when it comes to devouring the king of fruits, all bets are off.
It was little wonder when a member of the fairer sex reigned supreme at the first ever Facebook vs Weibo fans Durian Eating Competition on 25 July. Winnie Tan, one of the five Facebook fans invited for the contest, managed to chow down 10 seeds of durians in less than 60 seconds.
She won herself a one-year RWS Invites membership worth $150. The competition was a teaser to the main event – the RWS Invites Durian Fest 2013 on 23 and 24 August.
The 34-year-old, ‘trained’ in eating durians by her father since the tender age of three, told RWScoop that her strategy wasn’t about raw speed but of efficiency.
“I eat as I always do and it (durian seed) must be clean. The guy on my right finished first but the seeds were not entirely clean so he didn’t win.” Such was the level of competitiveness at the contest.
Tension filled the evening air as the competitors lined up next to each other outside the Malaysian Food Street. Although there was no trash talking, a side show of mind gaming was played when one Weibo fan flagged that he had 11 seeds of durians, prompting the rest to quickly inspect the number of durians on their plate.
Suffice to say, the ‘training’ Winnie received from her dad put her in good stead, as she chomped her way to victory in a relatively quick but efficient manner as no durian flesh was left behind.
During the durian season, feasting on durians is a daily occurrence for her. And her favourite type is the bittersweet D24. She said: “The Mao Shan Wang is too thick and filling, I can’t eat that much. But for the D24, I can eat more.”
The rest didn’t leave empty handed. Weibo fan Sherman Xie won an RWS Invites membership too when he correctly guessed the different variety of durian in an earlier game.
