5 reasons why you must watch Cinderella, A Fairly True Story

cinderella prince stage

Song and dance, magic, comical antagonists and a realistic twist to a familiar fairy tale. This heady concoction makes Cinderella, A Fairly True Story, the latest musical production staged at Resorts World theatre a worthy watch this festive period.

It’s a show for both the romantics and realists as it combines the magic of fairy tales with a sprinkling of reality.

Here are five reasons you should watch the show.

1. Cinderella’s costume change

In films, Cinderella’s transformation from her maid’s rags to a ball gown is easy to achieve with film editing. Watching this scene in a live stage show is–in the actress’s own words–magical.

Don’t blink during Cinderella’s transformation scene so you can see how she’s able to turn from rags to the belle of the ball by just twirling and twirling.

2. The comic antagonists

Meet the stepsisters

The show, which is close to the Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella, can be sombre at times. Good thing it’s punctuated by the silly antics of Cinderella’s stepsisters Grimella and Distressa. Be prepared to laugh out loud as the two characters provide comic relief with their punchy one-liners and physical comedy.

Still, in the end, we’re reminded that bullying doesn’t pay. The stepsisters and their mother pay the price for their bullying and are not able to live happily ever after.

3. Pop music weaved into the show

Singalong to pop songs

Musical director Matt Dunkley (who held the same role for the show Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story) does it again by weaving familiar pop songs into the musical.

Be ready to tap your feet at the familiar beats of She’s So Lovely by Scouting for Girls, I’ve Got A Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas; and sing along to the ballads of (Everything I Do) I Do It For You by Bryan Adams and Up Where We Belong by Joe Cocker.

There are also original compositions in the show too if you prefer to have these in a musical.

4. MagicCinderella, A Fairly True Story

Well, not hocus pocus magic but magical moments in the show that are created using light projection, movable props, and acrobats.

The show uses a lot of light projection and movable props to create different settings. Light projection is used to show the front page of the local newspaper in the kingdom. Look out for the funny headlines in the papers.

The movable props give each setting a different feel–from to the dark and creepy graveyard to Cinderella’s run-down house to the Prince’s overly childish bedroom and to the lavish ball and cathedral.

Kids will enjoy the acrobats and dancers who bring life to the different scenes.

5. Happily Ever After

And they lived happily ever after

In the age of Tinder and online dating, it’s easy to be cynical about love.

It’s nice to suspend disbelief for the length of the show. See how love at first sight plays out and how true love is able to conquer it all. You’ll be glad to know that the lead actors of the show are quite sure that Cinderella and her Prince will be able to live happily ever after.
