In the inaugural aRWSome Apprenticeship mentorship programme launched in June, we saw students from different walks of life coming together with the same goal – to learn the ropes of becoming a chef. Over the course of three days, the young ones picked up a myriad of culinary tips from a team of Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) chefs who, aside from imparting their skills, were also present to assess the students’ performance. The top student chefs, selected at the end of the course, would walk away with the grand prize of 2 pairs of tickets to Universal Studios Singapore each, with express passes included.
Graded based on several factors like professionalism, team work, safety and their ability to whip up a hearty meal, the winning team emerged in the form of two infectiously bubbly female participants – Nurul and Rosie.
And here are some of their post-programme thoughts…
“I was very happy to get the opportunity to learn from the chefs. I was also excited when we were told that the best group will win 4 tickets to Universal Studios Singapore with express passes! Those made me even more committed and I really put my heart and soul to it”, a beaming Nurul shared. “The chefs were very friendly, approachable and patient with us as well. Through this course, they taught me how to prepare a three-course meal: appetizer, main course and dessert. Not only did I learn to cook, I was also taught how to serve guests at a formal setting. I am very grateful to the chefs for willingly sacrificing their time to share some of their knowledge with us students.”
“I also made new friends from other schools, especially Rosie, my ever cheerful partner. Although there were only two of us (most teams had at three members), we persevered, worked together till the end and won! It was a wonderful experience cooking with someone whom I did not know at first and we are now friends. I hope this is not the last time I will be seeing them. I appreciate the chefs from RWS and Heartware for giving us this rare opportunity.”
Rosie echoed Nurul’s sentiments of taking home more than just culinary skills through the course…
An elated Rosie shares, “I have learn some basic culinary skills and the ability of using simple ingredients to prepare delicious food. Though the three-day course is tedious, I managed to make some friends and learnt how to whip up some nice dishes. Never did I expect , I would emerge victorious. I was on cloud nine when my group was announced the winner! A big lesson I’ve learnt from this course is that the key to victory lies in perseverance.”
