Best of 5: Foals

Since bursting into the indie-sphere in 2007, this Oxford quintet has gone on to win over more fans and critics alike. Come 1 March 2014, you’ll get to find out for yourself why they are named “Best Live Act” at Q Awards 2013, when they perform at our resort. This selection of five songs are what we hope to hear on their playlist next week. If you have favourites you wish to share, do leave a comment!

“Cassius” from “Antidotes” (2008)

Immediate, propulsive and catchy, this early single sets the template Foals would later flesh out in songs like “This Orient”, “Miami” and “My Number” (included here).

“Spanish Sahara” from “Total Life Forever” (2010)

From the hushed beginning to the surging climax, this is Foals’s lighters-in-the-air moment, so epic it is liable to give the likes of Coldplay and Snow Patrol a run for their money. Winner of “Best Track” at NME Awards 2011.

“My Number” from “Holy Fire” (2013)

Foals can do pop too, complete with joyous “ooh-ooh-oohs”, a killer hook lifted from a disco record (or Daft Punk’s playbook), and a groove that goes on and on.

“Bad Habit” from “Holy Fire” (2013)

Trademark staccato guitars play against twinkly textures and Yannis Philippakis’s restrained vocal, which has grown in expressive strength from the brash yelpings of earlier songs.

“Inhaler” from “Holy Fire” (2013)

And just when you think Foals have lost their edge, here comes a rock number with a riff so large and snarling, we suspect even Rage Against the Machine would approve. Winner of “Best Track” at NME Awards 2013.
