7 trivia about the Mandarin musical Alice in Wonderland

Love the story of Alice in Wonderland? Watch it come to life on stage with the help of 3D projection and animated characters who interact with other characters on stage. You’ll find these at the live musical Alice in Wonderland at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa on 11 and 12 September.

Here are seven things to know about the show:

1. An international collaboration
Produced by a Canadian company, the show is directed by Canadian director-choreographer Suzanne Goyette, written by Chinese playwright Wang Lingyun, and with Tao Kai–who has worked on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Game–as visual director.

2. English work, Chinese show
The 151 year-old story of Alice in Wonderland by English writer Lewis Carroll is performed in Mandarin in this family musical. English surtitle is available for the show.

3.  Original songs
There are 10 original songs in the musical, including the theme song which is recorded by the German Radio Orchestra.

4. 3D multimedia show
It’s a multimedia show combining glasses-free 3D projection with song, dance, and theatre. Actors are required to time their lines precisely as they interact with the animated 3D characters, including the Chesire Cat, on stage.

5. First overseas performance
The show in Singapore in September is the debut of the musical outside of China where it has been staged for two years with more than 100 sold-out shows. Next stop, Hong Kong.

6. Dual roles
Huang Yunning, the actress playing the evil Queen of Hearts also plays the kind Duchess. Watch how she changes character not just with costume change but using different voices in the show.

7. Quick wit
During a show in Qingdao, an audience member stepped on a wire and caused the projection to switch off. Xie Xinyi who was playing Alice saved the day by immediately improvising a game with the children in the audience.
