ROCK OF AGES THE MUSICAL is singing and dancing its way into the Resorts World™ Theatre from 6 to 24 August. To celebrate the occasion, we bring you a list of 1980s fashion fails and wins.
1980s fashion miss
Fashion in the 1980s was all about being big and loud. Here are the most cringeworthy styles of that time.
Big hair was in
Size did matter when it comes to the volume of hair for the men and women of the 1980s. If you weren’t blessed with a mane of hair, you would tease it and use hairspray to keep your hair big.
Interestingly, this hairstyle trend still continues among the affluent ladies in Indonesia. If you see a woman In Indonesia with big hair, you know that she’s sporting the most popular hairstyle among other tai tais.
Big shoulder pads
Is it said (ok, Wikipedia says) that shoulder pads which brought out masculinized shoulders were used by women seeking success in the corporate world and became an icon of women’s attempts to smash the glass ceiling. I’m just glad that I don’t need shoulder pads while I chip at the glass ceiling today.
Flashy neon colours
In order to visually stand out, teens and young adults in the 1980s wear neon colours. This also acts as a natural road signal to motorists. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were less traffic accidents at night then.
But why stop at neon tones, when you can dress in animal prints. Men did not escape the trend either, as demonstrated by Nic Cage.
1980s fashion wins
Despite all these fashion atrocities, the 1980s did include some fashion wins that are continued (or revived) today.
Geeky glasses/ sunglasses
The large-framed glasses of the 1980s have reincarnated as the eyewear of choice for hipsters today. But frames without actual lenses are still a fashion atrocity.
Leggings as street fashion
Nylon lycra leggings were previously used as exercise tights. In the 1980s, leggings started becoming part of street fashion. Still, leggings should never be worn as pants.
The 1980s inherited the mini-skirt trend from the previous decade. Thank goodness this trend is still around or ladies will be walking around with Victorian-length dresses.
